Negotiating IDentity
In contemporary societies, which
are globalized, digitalized and extremely mobile, fixed, singular identities (based on nationality, race, gender, class, etc.) have disintegrated. Identity is no longer a noun (a label) but more of a verb (an ongoing construction and performance).
It has become pluralistic, hybrid, fluid, fragmented, and often caught in the tension between self and other, inside and outside, history and the present.
Negotiation" as a dynamic process of compromise, confrontation, negotiation, or transaction. It takes place within the self ("Who am I?"It takes place within the self ("Who am I?") and between the self and the outside world (social norms, the gaze of others, cultural expectations). Negotiating Identity is a project that may not ultimately be about presenting a definitive identity, but rather about building a visual site - inviting the viewer to witness, and even participate in, a never-ending, dynamic and confusing "negotiation of identity".Negotiating Identity
